Tibetans in the barren, frozen uplands depend on these beasts of burden for survival. Yaks supply butter, cheese, wool for clothing, fertiliser that doubles as fuel (in treeless Tibet, yak poo is indispensable) and even sport (very popular, yak racing). Our yaks sporting red ribbons live out their natural lives, and are never used for meat. A female yak and calf make a perfect present for vegetarians and poor Tibetans.
